BELLY DANCE SPRING FEVER

by Jasmin Jahal, May 1998 (back)

It's wonderful news to report that Belly Dance in America is once again enjoying an upsurge in popularity. Middle Eastern dance classes across the nation are booming! An influx of excited new students are flooding the classrooms and seeking the knowledge, talents and experience of the best Middle Eastern Dance instructors.

The last time Belly Dance was a "fad" here in the U.S. was back in the 1970's. At that time, the fascination with Oriental dance was so great, classes and workshops were at their peak in attendance. In the 80's, the fad faded away, as aerobics took over. Then it was the Europeans that experienced Belly Dance Mania. The "die-hards" in America, those dancers and teachers who truly loved the dance as an art form, managed to survive the dry spell, and not only survive, but grow as artists. Now in the 90's, they are accomplished performers, choreographers and teachers, and they are ready for the current boom! If you are one of those die-hards, congrats at hanging in there and keeping this ancient dance form alive. If you are one of the new enthusiasts, welcome to the world of Oriental dance, where you can explore your femininity and get a good workout while have a lot of fun! Jasmin's advice: remember, quality over quantity! There is nothing wrong with checking out the credentials of your instructor. Observe several classes before you select the one you wish to study with. See the instructor in a live performance and, even if you know nothing about his art form, you can easily see the level of professionalism. Quality is Everything! Spring Fever is in the air. Enjoy the budding season!
